How the calculation works
This tool calculates what smoking costs from the number of cigarettes you smoke a day and the price of a pack. Price per cigarette = pack price รท cigarettes per pack Daily cost = price per cigarette ร cigarettes per day Monthly cost = daily cost ร 30 Yearly cost = daily cost ร 365 Ten-year cost = yearly cost ร 10 In Japan, more than half the price of a pack is tax (national and local tobacco taxes, a special tobacco tax and consumption tax), and prices have risen repeatedly with tax increases. The ten-year figure uses today's price, so any future price rises would push the real cost higher.

Things to be aware of
- Heated tobacco works the same way: enter the pack price and number of sticks.
- Lighters, ashtrays and smoking-related medical costs are not included.
- In Japan, smoking cessation clinics can be covered by health insurance if you meet the conditions. If you are thinking of quitting, talk to a clinic.
