Random picks and probability — wheels, dice, draws and the maths behind them.

Spinners, ladder lotteries, coin flips, dice and card draws for deciding an order or picking a winner, along with random team splitting and name selection. On the probability side there are tools for seeing the distribution of totals across several dice, the chance of the same outcome repeating a number of times, the birthday paradox, and a Monte Carlo estimate of pi — all ways of checking a probability by actually running it. Randomness comes either from a source chosen for its visual behaviour or from a cryptographic one, depending on what the tool is for.

What people use these for

  • Decide speaking order on the spot in a meeting
  • Split a group into random teams
  • See how the totals from several dice are distributed
  • Work out the odds of the same result occurring several times running
