How the calculation works
This tool converts English text to Morse code and plays it as dots and dashes using the browser's Web Audio API. Timing follows the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ratios: โข dot: 1 unit โข dash: 3 units โข gap between symbols within a character: 1 unit โข gap between characters: 3 units โข gap between words: 7 units The unit length is 1200 รท WPM milliseconds, where WPM is words per minute. This is the standard calculation based on the word "PARIS", which is exactly 50 units long.
Worked example

Things to be aware of
- Japanese wabun Morse is not supported. Only letters, digits and some symbols are played; other characters are skipped.
- Learners often use Farnsworth timing: each character is sent at full speed but the gaps between characters are lengthened, which helps you learn letters by their rhythm.
- On phones, silent mode may stop the sound from playing.

What does WPM (speed) mean?
Words per minute, the standard Morse code speed unit, based on how many times the reference word "PARIS" (50 units including its trailing space) could be sent in a minute: unit length (ms) = 1200 รท WPM.
What are the timing ratios?
Following the international standard (ITU-R M.1677-1): a dot = 1 unit, a dash = 3 units, the gap within a character = 1 unit, the gap between characters = 3 units, and the gap between words = 7 units.
What happens with unsupported characters?
Any character with no entry in the Morse code table is silently skipped.
