How the calculation works

Morse code represents characters as combinations of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). International Morse code defines the timing: a dash is three dots long, the gap within a character is one dot, the gap between characters three dots, and the gap between words seven dots. In text, this tool writes a dot as ".", a dash as "-", separates characters with a space, and words with " / ". Frequently used letters get the shortest codes: "E", the commonest letter in English, is a single dot, and "T" a single dash. Conversion uppercases the text and replaces each character using a lookup table. Characters not in the table (Japanese, some symbols) are simply dropped from the output.

Worked example

"SOS" ... --- ... S is three dots and O three dashes. Sent as a real distress signal, it is keyed as one continuous sequence without gaps between the letters. "HELLO WORLD" becomes: .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..

Things to be aware of

  • Unsupported characters (such as Japanese) are dropped from the output without any notice.
  • When converting Morse back to text, separate characters with a space and words with " / ".
  • Japanese kana Morse (wabun code) is not supported.
  • Conversion is text-only; audio playback is not supported.

FAQ

Does this support Japanese kana Morse code (Wabun code)?

No โ€” the current version only supports Latin letters, numbers, and basic punctuation, not Wabun code.

Can it play the Morse code as audio?
