๐Ÿ”ค Acronym Generator

Generated acronym

ASAP

Enter a multi-word phrase and this tool generates an acronym from the first letter of each word. Useful for creating short, memorable names for projects or teams.

How to use

  1. Enter the phrase you want to turn into an acronym (separate words with spaces).
  2. Optionally turn on "Skip common short words".
  3. The generated acronym is shown automatically.

How the calculation works

This tool splits the phrase into words at whitespace, takes the first letter or digit found in each word, converts it to upper case, and joins them in order. If a word starts with a symbol, the first letter or digit after it is used, so "(Beta)" gives "B". A hyphenated term such as "state-of-the-art" contains no spaces, so it counts as one word and gives just "S". With "Skip common short words" on, eleven words โ€” a, an, the, of, and, or, in, on, at, to, for โ€” are removed before the letters are taken. Formal abbreviations usually leave out articles and prepositions like these, so the result is closer to real-world acronyms. The comparison ignores case.

Worked example

Input: As Soon As Possible Output: ASAP Input: Department of Motor Vehicles Without skipping: DOMV With skipping: DMV ("of" is removed) Input: Portable Network Graphics Output: PNG Input: 3D graphics engine Output: 3GE (digits count as initials too)

Things to be aware of

  • Words written in hiragana, katakana or kanji are ignored. Convert Japanese phrases to romaji or English first.
  • Words joined by hyphens or slashes count as one word. Replace the symbols with spaces if you want each part's initial.
  • Before using a new acronym, check that it does not clash with an existing trademark or a well-known abbreviation with another meaning.
