How the calculation works
This tool reads text aloud using the browser's built-in speech synthesis (speechSynthesis in the Web Speech API). Speech is generated entirely on your device; your text is not sent anywhere. The available voices depend on your browser and operating system, so the same text sounds different on Windows, Mac and phones. Choose a Japanese voice for Japanese text and an English voice for English text for natural-sounding speech. Rate 1 is normal speed; 2 is twice as fast and 0.5 half as fast. Pitch 1 is normal; higher values raise the voice and lower values deepen it.
Worked example
Checking pronunciation in a foreign language 1. Enter English text 2. Choose an English voice (such as en-US) from the list 3. Lower the rate to about 0.8 so it is easier to follow When checking a script you will read aloud, a rate of about 1 to 1.2 is close to natural speaking speed.
Things to be aware of
- Available voices vary by browser and OS. If the voice list is empty, reload the page.
- Kanji may be misread and proper nouns may sound unnatural.
- Some browsers stop partway through long text; split it into shorter passages if so.
- Saving the speech as an audio file is not supported.
