๐Ÿง‘ Random Name Generator

Result

Generate random fictional names โ€” Japanese-style or Western-style โ€” for characters in a novel or game, or for sample data. Choose the gender, style, and how many to generate.

How to use

  1. Choose a name style (Japanese or Western) and gender.
  2. Enter how many names to generate.
  3. Click "Generate" to see a list of random names.

How the calculation works

This tool creates fictional names by picking one surname and one given name at random from built-in lists and combining them. Japanese names combine 15 common surnames (Satล, Suzuki, Takahashi and so on) with 12 male or 12 female given names. Western names combine 12 male or 12 female first names with 15 common surnames (Smith, Johnson and so on), shown as "first last". In both cases there are 15 ร— 12 = 180 combinations per gender. The choices use the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). You can create 1 to 30 names at a time. When the page opens, five Japanese male names are generated automatically once loading finishes.

Things to be aware of

  • With 180 combinations, generating many names at once can produce duplicates. Use the duplicate line remover if you need unique names.
  • The names are fictional but built from common names, so they may match real people. Do not use them in a way that refers to a real person.
  • Useful for test data, placeholder characters in stories or games, and sample entries on forms.
  • Japanese names are shown in kanji only, without readings.
