Tap in time with the beat to calculate BPM. Taps are automatically reset after a 2.5 second gap.
Tap a button along with a rhythm to measure a song's BPM (tempo) โ a simple tool for when you don't know a track's tempo, for matching tempos when DJ mixing, or for syncing up a tempo during band practice.
How to use
- Tap the "TAP" button repeatedly in time with the music.
- The BPM calculated from your tap intervals updates in real time.
- Click "Reset" to clear the tap count and start measuring again.
How the calculation works
Tap the button along with a songโs beat and the tool calculates its BPM (beats per minute) from the gaps between taps. BPM = 60000 รท average gap between taps (ms) It averages the gaps between the last 8 taps. Averaging smooths out the unevenness of individual taps, so the number settles as you keep tapping. A pause of 2.5 seconds or more starts a fresh measurement. Tap times are recorded with the browserโs precise elapsed-time clock (performance.now).
Worked example
Tapping every 0.5 s 60000 รท 500 = 120 BPM Gaps of 480, 520, 500 and 510 ms Average 502.5 ms โ about 119 BPM Typical tempos: ballads 60โ80, pop 100โ130, dance music 120โ130, drum and bass 160โ180
Things to be aware of
- Tapping along with a clear beat such as the kick or snare drum gives the most accurate result.
- If you get double or half the expected value, you may be tapping every other beat or twice per beat.
- To practise at the measured tempo, enter it in the Metronome tool.

How many taps do I need for an accurate reading?
More taps average out to a more accurate result. Aim for somewhere around 5-15 taps.
Can I reset partway through?
