๐ผ Note Frequency Table
108 notes
A searchable reference table mapping note names (like C4), MIDI note numbers, and frequencies (Hz). Useful for composing, checking synthesizer tuning settings, or confirming a note number in a DAW.
How to use
- Type a note name (e.g. A4), MIDI number, or frequency into the search box.
- The table filters in real time as you type.
- Check the corresponding note name, MIDI note number, and frequency.
How the calculation works
This table lists the note name (such as C4), MIDI note number and frequency (Hz) for the 108 notes from C0 to B8. Frequency = 440 ร 2^((MIDI number โ 69) รท 12) Frequencies use twelve-tone equal temperament with A4 (MIDI 69) at 440 Hz. Each semitone multiplies the frequency by about 1.0595 (the twelfth root of 2), and each octave doubles it. Search by note name (such as C#4), MIDI number or frequency. A frequency also finds notes within a quarter tone (half a semitone) of it, so you can see which note a measured frequency is closest to.
Worked example
A4 = MIDI 69 = 440.00 Hz (the tuning reference) C4 (middle C) = MIDI 60 = 261.63 Hz A0 (lowest piano key) = MIDI 21 = 27.50 Hz C8 (highest piano key) = MIDI 108 = 4186.01 Hz Searching โ261โ โ shows C4 (261.63 Hz).
Things to be aware of
- Orchestras sometimes tune A4 to 442 Hz or 443 Hz, which raises every note slightly.
- Some manufacturers, such as Yamaha, number octaves one lower and call middle C โC3โ.
- Real instruments produce overtones, so a tuner or analyser may show frequencies other than the fundamental.
FAQ
What frequency is A4?
Under the standard modern tuning reference, A4 is 440 Hz โ this table calculates all frequencies from that reference.
What is a MIDI note number?
A number from 0-127 assigned to each pitch under the MIDI standard, commonly used to specify notes in music production software.
Is this useful for checking synthesizer tuning settings?
Yes โ quickly look up the frequency (Hz) for a given note name as a reference for manually tuning a synthesizer or oscillator.
Is this useful for specifying a MIDI note number in a DAW?
Yes โ when entering a note number directly in a DAW, use this table to check which note name it corresponds to.
Can I look up a note name from a frequency?
Yes โ type a frequency value into the search box to see the note names with the closest matching frequency.
