How to use

  1. Choose "From tax-excluded price" or "From tax-included price."
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Choose a tax rate (10% standard, 8% reduced, or custom).
  4. The pre-tax amount, tax amount, and tax-included amount are calculated automatically.

How the calculation works

Consumption tax can be worked in two directions: from a pre-tax price to a tax-inclusive one, or back again. Pre-tax to tax-inclusive: pre-tax price ร— (1 + rate รท 100). Tax-inclusive to pre-tax: tax-inclusive price รท (1 + rate รท 100) โ€” you have to divide. Subtracting the rate from the tax-inclusive price does not work: 10% off ยฅ1,100 is ยฅ990, but the correct pre-tax price is ยฅ1,000. This tool rounds the pre-tax and tax-inclusive prices to the nearest yen and then takes the tax as tax-inclusive โˆ’ pre-tax, so the three figures always add up. Japan has two rates: the standard 10%, and a reduced 8% for food and non-alcoholic drinks (excluding dining in) and certain newspaper subscriptions.

Worked example

A food item at ยฅ1,000 before tax (reduced rate, 8%) Tax-inclusive: 1,000 ร— 1.08 = ยฅ1,080 Tax: ยฅ80 ยฅ5,500 including tax at the standard 10% Pre-tax: 5,500 รท 1.1 = ยฅ5,000 Tax: 5,500 โˆ’ 5,000 = ยฅ500

Things to be aware of

  • Businesses round fractions differently โ€” down, up or to nearest. This tool rounds to nearest.
  • Under Japan's qualified invoice system, rounding happens once per invoice per tax rate. Calculating item by item and adding up can differ from the invoice by a few yen.
  • The same food or drink can be taxed differently depending on whether it is taken away or eaten in.
  • Changing the rate lets you use this for value-added taxes in other countries.
