๐ฏ Savings Goal Calculator
Enter your goal amount, current savings, and monthly contribution (or your target timeframe) to calculate how long it'll take to reach your goal, or how much you need to save each month to hit it on time. Add an annual interest rate to simulate compound growth too.
How to use
- Choose a mode: "Calculate time from contribution" or "Calculate required contribution from time".
- Enter your goal amount, current savings, and annual interest rate (optional).
- Depending on the mode, enter your monthly contribution or your target timeframe.
- The result is calculated automatically.
How the calculation works
This tool calculates in two directions. From a monthly amount to a time frame: starting from your current savings, it applies balance ร (1 + monthly rate) + monthly contribution month by month and counts how many months it takes to reach the goal. The monthly rate is the annual rate รท 12. If the goal is not reached within 100 years (1,200 months), no result is shown. From a time frame to a monthly amount: it subtracts what your current savings will grow to by then from the goal, and divides the remainder by the factor ((1 + r)โฟ โ 1) รท r to get the required monthly contribution. At 0% interest, that is simply the shortfall divided by the number of months. The required amount is rounded up to the next yen.
Worked example
A ยฅ1,000,000 goal, ยฅ200,000 saved so far, saving ยฅ30,000 a month At 0%: shortfall ยฅ800,000 รท ยฅ30,000 = 26.7 โ 27 months (2 years 3 months) At 2%: interest brings it forward slightly, to 26 months (2 years 2 months) With smaller sums over short periods, interest makes only a small difference.
Things to be aware of
- If you leave the rate blank, it is treated as 0% with no interest.
- If the goal is at or below your current savings, you have already reached it and no result is shown.
- Tax on interest is not included.
- The calculation approximates contributions at the end of each month with monthly interest; real deposit accounts may calculate interest differently.
FAQ
What happens if I leave the interest rate blank?
It's treated as 0%, giving a simple calculation with no compound growth.
What if the goal amount is less than my current savings?
Since you've already reached your goal, no result is shown.
What if my monthly contribution is too small to ever reach the goal?
If it would take longer than 100 years (1,200 months), no result is shown. Try increasing your contribution or adjusting your goal.
