How the calculation works
Splitting a bill starts with total รท number of people, but that usually leaves awkward odd amounts. This tool rounds each share up to a unit you choose (10, 100, 500 or 1,000 yen and so on) so the money is easy to collect. The formula is share = โtotal รท people รท unitโ ร unit, where โ โ means round up. Because it rounds up, the amount collected is equal to or slightly more than the bill. That surplus (collected โ total) is shown too, so the organiser can decide what to do with it โ carry it to next time, keep it for their trouble, and so on. Rounding down would leave the total short, with someone covering the gap, so this tool only rounds up.
Worked example
A ยฅ23,450 bill split six ways, collected in ยฅ100 units 1. Straight division: 23,450 รท 6 โ ยฅ3,908.33 2. Rounded up to ยฅ100: ยฅ4,000 3. Collected: 4,000 ร 6 = ยฅ24,000 4. Surplus: 24,000 โ 23,450 = ยฅ550 Without rounding, each person would pay ยฅ3,909 (ยฅ23,454 in total), with loose change changing hands.
Things to be aware of
- Shares are rounded up, so the amount collected is at least the bill. Agree in advance how to handle the surplus.
- Weighted splits, such as charging non-drinkers less, are not supported.
- For splitting bills abroad with a tip, the tip calculator is handier.
- Enter a whole number of people, at least one.
