How the calculation works
This tool estimates a cat's age in human years, following the same idea as the life-stage guidelines from the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) and others: โข Up to 1 year: 1 year = 15 human years (enter months as a decimal) โข 2 years: 24 (9 years added between ages 1 and 2) โข From 3 years: add 4 years for each year Human age = 24 + (cat age โ 2) ร 4 (from age 3) Cats reach adulthood in their first two years and then age about four human years per year โ one year less per year than the dog conversion.

Things to be aware of
- Indoor-only cats commonly live to around 15, and some pass 20.
- From about age 7, check-ups once or twice a year are recommended to catch kidney and other diseases early.

Is the formula different from the dog age calculator?
Yes. The conversion up to 2 years is the same, but the amount added per year after that differs โ about 4 years per year for cats versus about 5 for dogs.
