How the calculation works
This tool finds the Western astrological sign for a birthday (month and day). The sign depends on which of the twelve sections of the ecliptic — the sun's apparent path across the sky — the sun is in. Date ranges used (the common convention) Aries 3/21–4/19, Taurus 4/20–5/20, Gemini 5/21–6/20, Cancer 6/21–7/22, Leo 7/23–8/22, Virgo 8/23–9/22, Libra 9/23–10/22, Scorpio 10/23–11/21, Sagittarius 11/22–12/21, Capricorn 12/22–1/19, Aquarius 1/20–2/18, Pisces 2/19–3/20 The page opens with today's date selected.
Worked example
March 21 → Aries (the first day) July 7 → Cancer December 25 → Capricorn February 29 → Pisces On cusp days (such as March 20 and 21), the sun's actual position may put you in the neighbouring sign depending on the year and time of birth.
Things to be aware of
- Cusp dates shift by about a day from year to year depending on when the sun crosses each boundary. If you were born on a cusp, check an ephemeris for your birth year.
- Because of the precession of the Earth's axis, astrological signs no longer line up with the actual constellations used in astronomy.
- The Chinese zodiac is a separate system based on the Chinese calendar; see the Chinese zodiac calculator.
