How the calculation works
A tip is simply the bill multiplied by the tip rate: tip = bill ร rate, and total = bill + tip. Divide the total by the number of people to get each share. The subtle part is which amount the rate applies to. In the United States it is often said the tip should be calculated on the pre-tax amount, but plenty of people tip on the post-tax total, and there is no strict rule either way. Some countries also include a service charge in the bill already, in which case an additional tip may not be expected. For display, amounts are shown with a yen sign and rounded to the nearest whole unit. The arithmetic works identically for dollars or any other currency โ just read the symbol as your own currency.
Worked example
A 12,000 bill, 18% tip, split three ways 1. Tip: 12,000 ร 0.18 = 2,160 2. Total: 12,000 + 2,160 = 14,160 3. Per person: 14,160 รท 3 = 4,720 At 15%, the tip is 1,800, the total 13,800 and each share 4,600 โ three percentage points make a 120 difference per person.
Things to be aware of
- Appropriate tip rates vary widely by country, region and type of venue. Check local custom before you travel.
- If a service charge is already on the bill, an extra tip may not be needed.
- Amounts are rounded to whole units, so when the total does not divide evenly, per-person ร people may not exactly match the total.
- No currency conversion is performed; read the displayed symbol as whatever currency you are using.
