How to use

How the calculation works
Unit price is price รท quantity. Bringing both products to a common measure โ per gram, per millilitre, per item โ lets you compare different pack sizes fairly. The saving is shown as a percentage of the more expensive unit price. With the cheaper unit price a and the dearer one b, the cheaper product is (1 โ a รท b) ร 100% cheaper. The essential step is entering both quantities in the same unit. Entering one in grams and the other in kilograms throws the unit price off by a factor of 1,000. Shelf labels that show a unit price ("per 100g") can also use different reference quantities from shop to shop, so working it out yourself is the reliable approach.
Worked example
A 500g pack at 398 versus a 1kg pack at 698 1. Use grams for both: 1kg โ 1,000g 2. Pack A: 398 รท 500 = 0.796 per g 3. Pack B: 698 รท 1,000 = 0.698 per g 4. Saving: (1 โ 0.698 รท 0.796) ร 100 โ 12.3% The 1kg pack is about 12% cheaper per gram โ though if part of it goes to waste, the effective unit price rises.
Things to be aware of
- Enter both quantities in the same unit. Mixing g and kg, or ml and L, gives a meaningless comparison.
- A lower unit price is no saving if you end up throwing some away. Consider shelf life and how quickly you use it.
- To include points or coupons, enter the amount you actually pay as the price.
- Two products at a time. For more, compare the cheaper of each pair against the next.
FAQ
Can I compare products measured in different units, like count vs. grams?
No โ for an accurate comparison, both Product A and Product B's quantity need to be entered in the same unit (both in grams, or both in count, etc.).
Does it show the percentage saved?
Yes โ it shows how many percent cheaper the better-value product is compared to the other.
Can I compare three or more products?
No โ this tool only compares two products at a time. For three or more, compare them two at a time in sequence.
