How the calculation works
This tool adds, subtracts, multiplies or divides two fractions and shows the result as a reduced fraction and a decimal. Add: a/b + c/d = (a ร d + c ร b) รท (b ร d) Subtract: a/b โ c/d = (a ร d โ c ร b) รท (b ร d) Multiply: a/b ร c/d = (a ร c) รท (b ร d) Divide: a/b รท c/d = (a ร d) รท (b ร c) The result is reduced by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, found with the Euclidean algorithm. A negative denominator has its sign moved to the numerator, and a denominator of 1 is shown as a whole number.
Worked example
1/2 + 1/3 = (1 ร 3 + 1 ร 2) รท (2 ร 3) = 5/6 โ 0.8333 3/4 ร 2/9 = 6/36 โ divide by the GCD 6 โ 1/6 2/3 รท 4/9 = (2 ร 9) รท (3 ร 4) = 18/12 = 3/2 (1.5)
Things to be aware of
- Enter whole numbers for the numerators and denominators. Anything after a decimal point is ignored.
- A denominator of 0, or dividing by zero, cannot be calculated.
- Convert mixed numbers (1 1/2) to improper fractions (3/2) before entering them.
