How the calculation works
This tool writes an integer out in English words โ useful for cheques, contracts and invoices that require amounts in words. English groups numbers in threes from the right, naming each group with thousand, million, billion or trillion. Each three-digit group is "โฆ hundred" followed by the last two digits, and 21โ99 join the tens and ones with a hyphen (twenty-one). Japanese number units change every four digits (ไธ, ๅ, ๅ ), whereas English changes every three, matching the commas in written numbers. The range is integers, including negatives, below one quadrillion.
Worked example
12345 โ twelve thousand three hundred forty-five 1000000 โ one million 2026 โ two thousand twenty-six -58 โ negative fifty-eight 1,234,567,890 โ one billion two hundred thirty-four million five hundred sixty-seven thousand eight hundred ninety
Things to be aware of
- British English usually adds "and" after hundred ("one hundred and five"). This tool uses the American style without "and".
- Years are usually read in pairs, such as 1999 as "nineteen ninety-nine".
- On cheques the cents are often added as a fraction, as in "โฆ and 00/100 dollars".
