How the calculation works
Every area is converted to square metres first. Because area is length squared, the length conversion factor is squared too: if a foot is 0.3048m, a square foot is 0.3048ยฒ = 0.09290304 mยฒ. The tsubo, common in Japanese property listings, is the area of a square six shaku (one ken) on a side. A shaku is defined as 10/33 m, so a ken is 6 ร 10/33 = 20/11 m and a tsubo is (20/11)ยฒ = 400/121 โ 3.3058 mยฒ. A hectare is a 100m square, 10,000 mยฒ. An acre is 4,046.8564224 mยฒ โ a unit said to derive from the area a team of oxen could plough in a day.
Worked example
A 70 mยฒ apartment in tsubo 70 รท 3.3058 โ 21.18 tsubo Since a tsubo is roughly two tatami mats, that is about 42 mats. A 1,000 sq ft overseas listing is 1,000 ร 0.09290304 โ 92.9 mยฒ, or about 28.1 tsubo.
Things to be aware of
- Tatami sizes vary by region, so "one tsubo = two mats" is only approximate.
- Listed floor areas may be measured to the wall centre line or to the inner wall face; Japanese land registry figures use the inner measurement.
- Square feet and "feet square" (a square of that side length) are different things โ do not mix them up.
- Results are rounded for display.
