How the calculation works
Converting a fuel price just swaps the volume unit: multiply the price per litre by the litres in a gallon to get the price per gallon. There are two gallons. The US gallon is 3.78541 L and the imperial (UK) gallon 4.54609 L, about 20% larger. US pump prices are per US gallon; the UK now normally prices per litre, but imperial gallons still appear in older material and in fuel economy figures. No currency conversion is performed — the price stays in whatever currency you enter. To compare countries, convert to a common currency with an exchange rate first, then use this tool for the units.
Worked example
A Japanese pump price of ¥170 per litre, per US gallon 170 × 3.78541 ≈ ¥643.5 per gallon Per imperial gallon it is 170 × 4.54609 ≈ ¥772.8. A US price of $3.50 per gallon is 3.50 ÷ 3.78541 ≈ $0.925 per litre. Multiply by the exchange rate to compare with yen.
Things to be aware of
- No currency conversion is done; check the exchange rate separately.
- US and imperial gallons differ by about 20%. Always confirm which one is meant.
- Fuel taxes differ enormously between countries, which limits how much a straight price comparison tells you.
- Watch the grade (regular or premium) and whether the price is for petrol or diesel.
