⚖️ Weight Converter
Convert weight units in real time — from milligrams and kilograms to ounces and pounds. Useful for cooking recipes, checking the weight of overseas products, or verifying luggage weight limits. Enter a value in any one field and the rest update automatically.
How to use
- Enter a value into any weight unit field (mg, g, kg, t, oz, lb, etc.).
- The other unit fields update with the converted value in real time.
- To convert a different value, just overwrite the number — it recalculates automatically.
How the calculation works
Every weight is converted to grams first and then to the target unit. A pound (lb) is 453.59237g and an ounce (oz) is a sixteenth of that, 28.349523125g. The pound figure is an exact definition from the 1959 international yard and pound agreement. The kilogram itself was redefined in 2019: rather than the physical International Prototype Kilogram, it is now fixed through a physical constant, the Planck constant. What we casually call weight is, in physics, mass. Bathroom and kitchen scales display mass, treated as a value corrected for the small variations in gravity from place to place.
Worked example
Checking a 50-pound airline baggage limit in kilograms 50 × 0.45359237 ≈ 22.68kg Going the other way, a 23kg domestic allowance is 23 ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 50.71 lb. Airlines frequently set roughly the same limit in different units — 50 lb in one place, 23kg in another.
Things to be aware of
- This ounce is the avoirdupois ounce (about 28.35g), not the troy ounce (about 31.10g) used for precious metals.
- Fluid ounces (fl oz) measure volume, not weight — use the volume converter for those.
- The tonne (t) here is the metric tonne of 1,000kg, not the US short ton (about 907kg) or UK long ton (about 1,016kg).
- Values are rounded for display. Recompute from the definitions where precise measurement matters.
