How the calculation works
PNG, JPEG and WebP compress images differently. PNG is lossless: it keeps every detail and supports transparency (an alpha channel), which suits text, diagrams and screenshots. JPEG is lossy: it discards information the eye is unlikely to notice, cutting file size dramatically โ ideal for photographs, but with no transparency. WebP, developed by Google, supports both lossless and lossy compression as well as transparency, and at similar quality is often smaller than JPEG. This tool draws the image onto a browser Canvas and exports it in the chosen format. For JPEG and WebP you can set the quality (0 to 1): lower values give smaller files but make compression artefacts such as blockiness more visible.
Worked example
Converting a transparent PNG logo to JPEG JPEG cannot store transparency, so the transparent areas are filled with white. On a page with a non-white background, you will see a white box around the logo. To keep transparency, choose WebP or PNG. Converting a photo from JPEG (quality 0.9) to WebP usually makes the file smaller, though the difference depends on the image โ compare the before and after sizes shown.
Things to be aware of
- Converting to JPEG turns transparent areas white.
- Lossy formats (JPEG, lossy WebP) degrade a little more with every re-encode. Keep the original.
- EXIF data such as capture date and location is lost when the image is redrawn on a Canvas.
- Some older browsers and applications cannot open WebP.
