Convert volume units in real time โ€” from milliliters and liters to gallons and cups. Useful for measuring overseas recipes, checking fuel tank capacity, or comparing beverage bottle sizes.

How to use

  1. Enter a value into any volume unit field (ml, L, mยณ, cup, gallon, etc.).
  2. The other unit fields update with the converted value in real time.
  3. To match a recipe or product label written in a different unit, just overwrite the number.

How the calculation works

Every volume is converted to litres first. A millilitre equals one cubic centimetre (cc), a litre is 1,000 ml, and a cubic metre is 1,000 L. Imperial liquid measures differ between the United States and the United Kingdom. This tool uses US units: a US gallon is about 3.785 L, a US fluid ounce about 29.57 ml, a pint about 473 ml and a quart about 946 ml. The imperial gallon (about 4.546 L) is roughly 20% larger. Cooking measures also vary by country. The cup here is 240 ml, the cup used for US nutrition labelling; a teaspoon is about 4.93 ml and a tablespoon about 14.79 ml. Japanese measuring cups hold 200 ml, with 15 ml tablespoons and 5 ml teaspoons, so watch the difference when following an overseas recipe with local equipment.

Worked example

Measuring "2 cups of milk" from a US recipe 2 ร— 240 = 480 ml With a 200 ml Japanese measuring cup, that is two cups plus 80 ml. A 12 fl oz US can holds 12 ร— 29.5735 โ‰ˆ 354.9 ml, practically the same as a 350 ml can.

Things to be aware of

  • Cup sizes differ by country: 200 ml in Japan, 240 ml for this tool's US cup, and 250 ml in places such as Australia.
  • Gallons and pints in British recipes are about 20% larger than the US values used here.
  • Flour and other powders vary a lot in weight for the same volume depending on packing. Weigh them when accuracy matters.
  • Fluid ounces (fl oz) measure volume and are not the same as weight ounces (oz).

FAQ

Are US and UK gallons the same size?

No โ€” a US gallon (~3.785 L) differs from a UK gallon (~4.546 L). This tool uses the commonly used US gallon.

Can it convert recipe cups too?

Yes โ€” convert between cups and milliliters/liters, which is handy for adapting overseas recipes.

Can I convert a car's fuel tank size from gallons to liters?

Yes โ€” enter the capacity in the gal field and it converts to liters automatically, useful for reading specs of overseas vehicles.

Can I check a beverage bottle's size in ml from fl oz?

Yes โ€” convert between US fluid ounces and milliliters to check the contents of imported products.

Does it support tablespoons and teaspoons?

Yes โ€” both tsp and tbsp are supported, useful for converting recipe measurements.
