How the calculation works
Estimate how long a candle will burn from the weight of its wax and how much it burns per hour. Burn time (hours) = wax weight (g) รท burn rate (g/hour) The burn rate depends on the wick size, the candleโs diameter and the type of wax. If the product does not state it, weigh the candle before and after burning it for a while (7 g lighter after an hour means 7 g/hour).
Worked example
200 g of wax at 7 g/hour โ about 28.6 hours For container candles, use the weight of the wax only, not the container. Burning it 2โ3 hours at a time, a 200 g candle lasts about ten sessions.
Things to be aware of
- On the first burn, let the whole surface melt (about an hour per 2.5 cm of diameter) to avoid tunnelling down the middle.
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm for less soot and a steadier flame.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
