๐Ÿšฟ Watering Can Trips Calculator

Total water needed รท can capacity = trips needed (rounded up).

Trips needed4 trips

Enter the total amount of water your garden or planters need (liters) and your watering can's capacity (liters) to calculate how many trips (refills) you'll need to water them.

How to use

  1. Enter the total water needed (liters).
  2. Enter your watering can's capacity (liters).
  3. The number of trips needed is calculated automatically.

How the calculation works

Work out how many trips you need to make with a watering can from the total water needed and the canโ€™s capacity. Trips = water needed รท can capacity (rounded up) The last trip counts even if the can is not full.

Worked example

25 L needed with a 6 L can โ†’ 25 รท 6 = 4.2 โ†’ 5 trips Estimating water for a garden: area (mยฒ) ร— depth (mm) = water (L) For example, 5 mm of water over 10 mยฒ is 50 L. A 65 cm planter usually takes about 3โ€“5 L, until water runs out of the bottom.

Things to be aware of

  • In summer, water in the cool of the morning or evening to reduce evaporation and stress on plants.
  • If you need many trips, a hose or a sprayer with a tank makes it easier.
  • Using water from a rain barrel saves on your water bill.

FAQ

How do I estimate the total water needed?

It varies by plant type and container size, but common approaches include watering a potted plant until water drains from the bottom, or estimating garden bed volume from area ร— desired watering depth (mm).

What's the formula?

Trips needed = total water needed รท watering can capacity, rounded up (a partial can still counts as one trip).

I want to know when to water next, not how many trips per session.

For scheduling your next watering date, use the Plant Watering Schedule tool instead. This tool calculates how many refills you need for a single watering session.
