How the calculation works
A checklist of what to do when moving house, split into six stages from a month before to after the move. Tick items as you finish them and a bar shows your overall progress. Deadlines for Japanese municipal procedures โข Moving-out notice (tenshutsu-todoke): from about two weeks before the move until moving day (online via Mynaportal if you have a My Number Card) โข Moving-in notice (tennyลซ-todoke): within 14 days of starting to live at the new address โข Driving licence address change: promptly after the move (at a police station or licence centre) For a move within the same municipality, a single change-of-address notice (tenkyo-todoke) replaces the two.

Example timeline for moving at the end of March End of February: get quotes from movers (MarchโApril is peak season, with limited bookings and higher prices) Mid-March: moving-out notice, post forwarding, internet transfer Late March: electricity, gas and water, run down the fridge The day before: unplug the fridge, drain the washing machine Within 14 days after: moving-in notice
Things to be aware of
- Ticks are not saved. Take a screenshot before closing the page if you want a record.
- Turning on gas requires someone present, so book it for moving day or the next day to have hot water straight away.
- Japan Post forwarding sends mail addressed to your old address to the new one for one year.
