๐ŸŒฑ Grass Seed Coverage Calculator

Area ร— coverage rate = total seed needed.

Seed needed1,500 g1.5 kg

Enter the area you want to seed (square meters) and the recommended coverage rate printed on the seed package (grams per square meter) to calculate the total amount of seed you need.

How to use

  1. Enter the area to seed (mยฒ).
  2. Enter the recommended coverage rate from the seed package (g/mยฒ).
  3. The total amount of seed needed is calculated automatically.

How the calculation works

Calculate how much grass seed you need from the area to sow and the sowing rate per square metre printed on the seed packet. Seed needed (g) = area (mยฒ) ร— rate (g/mยฒ) Sowing rates vary a lot between grass types. Use the figure on the packet, given as โ€œg/mยฒโ€ or โ€œcovers X mยฒโ€.

Worked example

20 mยฒ at 20 g/mยฒ โ†’ 400 g One tatami mat is about 1.65 mยฒ and one tsubo about 3.3 mยฒ (10 tsubo โ‰ˆ 33 mยฒ). Sowing time: cool-season grasses in spring or autumn, warm-season grasses from spring to early summer.

Things to be aware of

  • For even coverage, split the seed in half and sow in two passes at right angles.
  • Keep the soil moist with regular watering until the seeds sprout.
  • Korai grass, common in Japanese gardens, is hard to grow from seed and is usually laid as turf.

FAQ

Where do I find the recommended coverage rate?

It's typically printed on the seed package or product description as "X g per mยฒ" or "X g/mยฒ". Recommended rates vary by grass type.

What if my area is in a different unit?

Convert it to square meters with another unit converter tool first, then enter it here.

What's the formula?

Total seed needed (g) = area (mยฒ) ร— coverage rate (g/mยฒ) โ€” a simple multiplication.
