How the calculation works
Enter a year to check whether it is a leap year, a year in which February has 29 days. The current year is shown to start with. Leap year rules (Gregorian calendar) 1. A year divisible by 4 is a leap year 2. except a year divisible by 100, which is not 3. except a year divisible by 400, which is The Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. Adding a day every 4 years makes the average year 365.25 days, slightly too long. Dropping the leap day once a century and restoring it every 400 years brings the average to 365.2425 days and keeps the calendar in step with the seasons.

Things to be aware of
- The Gregorian calendar began in 1582 (Japan adopted it in 1873). For earlier years, the result applies the same rules backwards.
- People born on February 29 often celebrate on February 28 or March 1 in common years.
- Years are supported up to the largest integer JavaScript handles exactly (about 9 quadrillion).
FAQ
What's the rule for leap years?
A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100 โ unless they're also divisible by 400 (e.g. 2000 is a leap year, but 1900 is not).
Can I check year 0 or years BCE?
You can technically enter 0 or negative numbers, but calendar handling for those gets complicated โ this tool is intended for ordinary calendar years.
