How the calculation works
From a latitude, longitude and date, this tool calculates sunrise, sunset, solar noon (when the Sun is highest, due south in the northern hemisphere) and day length. It starts with today in Tokyo. It uses the solar position formula used by NOAA (the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and others. Sunrise and sunset are when the upper edge of the Sun touches the horizon, using โ0.833ยฐ: about 0.57ยฐ of atmospheric refraction plus the Sunโs radius of about 0.27ยฐ. Near the poles, some days have midnight sun (the Sun never sets) or polar night (it never rises), and the tool says so.

Things to be aware of
- Times are shown in the selected cityโs time zone. If you only change the latitude and longitude, the previously selected cityโs time zone is kept.
- Mountains, buildings and elevation are not included. The moment you actually see the Sun can differ by several minutes or more.
- Solar noon in Tokyo is before 12:00 because Tokyo lies east of 135ยฐE, the reference meridian of Japan Standard Time.
FAQ
What time zone are the results shown in?
Results are shown in the local time of the time zone for the selected city preset. If you manually change the latitude/longitude, the display keeps the previously selected presetโs time zone, so take care when specifying a very different region.
When does it show โmidnight sunโ or โpolar nightโ?
At high latitudes, there are days around the summer solstice when the sun never sets (midnight sun) and days around the winter solstice when it never rises (polar night). On such days, this is shown instead of sunrise/sunset times.
How accurate is this calculation?
It uses the sunrise equation widely used by NOAA and others, and typically agrees with published almanac times to within 1โ2 minutes. Terrain, elevation and the dayโs atmospheric conditions are not included.
