Wrong guesses remaining: 6

Guess a hidden English word one letter at a time in this classic word game. Six wrong guesses and it's game over. Good for practicing spelling or testing your vocabulary.

How to use

  1. Click letters on the on-screen keyboard to guess which ones appear in the word.
  2. Correct letters fill in the blanks; each wrong letter advances the drawing by one stage.
  3. Guess every letter to win, or make 6 wrong guesses for game over. Press "Next word" to try a new one.

How the calculation works

Guess the hidden English word one letter at a time. Pick a letter in the word and every place it appears is revealed. Pick a letter that is not there and another part of the drawing is added. The game ends after 6 wrong guesses (you can keep going through 5). You win when every letter is revealed. Wins and losses are counted. Words are five- and six-letter words of the kind met early in learning English, and guesses are not case-sensitive.

Worked example

_ _ _ _ _ _ (six letters) Guess E โ†’ _ _ _ _ E _ Guess T โ†’ _ _ _ _ E T Guess A โ†’ _ _ A _ E T โ€ฆ โ†’ PLANET The most common letters in English are said to be E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H and R. Starting with these is efficient.

Things to be aware of

  • The same word never comes up twice in a row, but the word list is limited.
  • Finding the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) first makes the shape of the word easier to see.
  • Results are kept only while the page is open.

FAQ

How many wrong guesses am I allowed?

You can make up to 5 wrong guesses and keep going; the 6th wrong guess ends the game.

Is guessing case-sensitive?

No, everything is handled as lowercase internally and displayed in uppercase on screen.

Can the same word come up twice in a row?

The game avoids repeating the same word immediately, but since the word list is limited, you may see a word youโ€™ve already had again after playing for a while.
