How the calculation works
A 30-second typing game: type the sentences shown as quickly and accurately as you can. When you finish one sentence, the next appears. At the end you see your speed (WPM) and accuracy. WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ typing time (minutes) Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100 WPM (words per minute) is the standard measure of typing speed. Following the average length of English words, every 5 characters, spaces included, count as one word. The practice text includes pangrams, sentences that use all 26 letters. Only English is used so that results do not depend on differences between Japanese input methods (IMEs).
Worked example
120 correct characters in 30 seconds WPM = (120 ÷ 5) ÷ 0.5 = 48 Rough guide 20–30 WPM: getting used to the keyboard 40–50 WPM: comfortable for everyday office work 60 WPM or more: fast
Things to be aware of
- Aim for 95% accuracy before speed; accuracy is what makes you fast in the end.
- For touch typing, keep your index fingers on the home keys, F and J.
- Results are not saved. Noting them down lets you see your progress.
FAQ
How is WPM calculated?
WPM is calculated as (correct characters typed / 5) divided by the time played in minutes, a standard typing-test formula.
Why is the practice text always in English?
Typing romanized Japanese reliably through a plain text box varies a lot between IME setups, so the practice sentences are kept as simple, language-neutral English text for consistent results in any locale.
Can I use this for daily typing practice?
Yes — the quick 30-second format makes it easy to fit in as a regular daily habit.
How is accuracy calculated?
It's the percentage of typed characters that matched the target text correctly.
Does it save my best score over time?
The current version only shows your WPM and accuracy for that session — there's no history of past results saved.
