How the calculation works
Generate Code 11, a one-dimensional barcode for digits and the hyphen. Developed in 1977, it has mainly been used to label telecommunications cables and equipment. Its 11 characters, the digits 0โ9 and the hyphen (-), give it its name. Code 11 is normally printed with check digits to catch misreads. This tool adds one (C) for data up to 10 characters and two (C and K) for 11 or more. The check digits are not shown in the text under the barcode.
Worked example
โ0123-4567โ (9 characters) โ a barcode with one check digit, C โ12345678901โ (11 characters) โ a barcode with two, C and K Up to 20 characters can be entered.
Things to be aware of
- Letters cannot be used.
- It is compact but has weak built-in error detection, so the scannerโs check-digit setting should match.
- For new systems, Code 128 is more common and more widely supported.
