EAN-8 is a shortened barcode standard designed for small products, consisting of 7 data digits plus 1 check digit for a total of 8 digits.

Generates EAN-8 barcodes, a compact barcode standard designed for small product packaging. The check digit (the final error-detection digit) is calculated and verified automatically, so you get a correctly formatted barcode instantly.

How to use

  1. Enter 7 or 8 digits.
  2. If you enter 7 digits, the check digit is calculated automatically.
  3. Download the generated barcode as SVG or PNG.

How the calculation works

Generate EAN-8, the 8-digit barcode for small product packages (called short JAN in Japan). Enter 7 digits and the check digit is calculated and added as the 8th. If you enter 8 digits, the check digit is verified. Check digit (weights in the opposite order to EAN-13) Add three times each digit in an odd position (from the left) to each digit in an even position, then subtract the last digit of the total from 10 (0 if it already ends in 0).

Worked example

For 4912345 4ร—3 + 9 + 1ร—3 + 2 + 3ร—3 + 4 + 5ร—3 = 54 Last digit 4 โ†’ 10 โˆ’ 4 = 6 โ†’ 49123456 Used on gum, sweets, small cosmetics and other products with no room for a 13-digit barcode.

Things to be aware of

  • EAN-8 numbers for real products must be assigned individually by GS1.
  • Anything other than digits is removed.
  • For 13-digit JAN (EAN-13) barcodes, use the JAN Generator.
