How the calculation works
Enter a latitude, longitude and place name to make a QR code that opens the location in a map app when scanned. The code holds a standard location URI (RFC 5870): geo:35.6762,139.6503 With a name, it adds a label: geo:35.6762,139.6503?q=35.6762,139.6503(Tokyo) Latitude runs from โ90 to 90 and longitude from โ180 to 180. Values are read as numbers before being written, so stray characters never end up in the code.
Worked example
Tokyo Station: latitude 35.6812, longitude 139.7671 Print it on flyers or invitations so the location opens straight away in the readerโs map app. In Google Maps, long-press a spot (right-click on a computer) to see its coordinates.
Things to be aware of
- Four decimal places of latitude and longitude is about 10 m of precision; five is about 1 m.
- The iPhone camera may not support geo: links. If it must open everywhere, encode a map service URL instead.
- North and east are positive; south and west are negative.
