How the calculation works
Cropping keeps a chosen part of an image and discards the rest. Here you select the area on a scaled-down preview. The image on screen has been shrunk to fit. So when exporting, the tool converts your selection back into original image coordinates by multiplying its position and size by the scale factor, original width ÷ displayed width. However small the preview, the crop is taken from the image at full resolution. Choosing an aspect-ratio preset (1:1, 16:9, 9:16 and so on) locks the selection to that ratio — useful for avatars and thumbnails that must have a fixed shape. For printing, there are also 3.5 × 5 in photo-print (89 × 127 mm) and A-series paper (A4 and so on, 1 : √2) ratios, in landscape and portrait.
Worked example
A 1200-pixel-wide image displayed 600 pixels wide The scale factor is 1200 ÷ 600 = 2. Selecting a 300 × 300 area at (100, 50) on screen crops a 600 × 600-pixel area starting at (200, 100) in the actual image. For a profile picture, choose 1:1 and move the selection so the face is centred to get a square image.
Things to be aware of
- The output size is the size of your selection in the original image. To hit an exact pixel size, resize afterwards.
- Saving as JPEG loses transparency.
- EXIF data (camera and location information) is not included in the output.
- Phone photos may display rotated because of their orientation metadata.
