How the calculation works
This tool resizes by redrawing the image onto a browser Canvas at the width and height you specify, then exporting the result as an image file. Everything happens in your browser; the image is never sent to a server. With "keep aspect ratio" on, entering one dimension calculates the other to preserve the original proportions: new height = original height ร new width รท original width. Setting width and height independently stretches the image. Shrinking loses little quality, but enlarging has to invent pixels by interpolating between existing ones, so it inevitably blurs. For JPEG and WebP output you can set quality from 10 to 100%: lower values make smaller files but add compression noise. PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting.
Worked example
Turning a 4032 ร 3024 phone photo into a 1200-pixel-wide blog image 1. Turn on "keep aspect ratio" and enter 1200 for the width 2. The height is calculated as 3024 ร 1200 รท 4032 = 900 3. Choose JPEG at around 80% quality and download The pixel count drops from about 12.2 million to 1.08 million โ roughly an eleventh โ and the file shrinks dramatically.
Things to be aware of
- Enlarging beyond the original size blurs the image. Start from the highest-resolution source you have.
- Converting to JPEG loses transparency; choose PNG or WebP to keep it.
- Because the image is redrawn on a Canvas, EXIF data (capture date, location) is not included in the output.
- Very large images may fail to process on devices with limited memory.
