How the calculation works
Removes the Exif data embedded in photos: when it was taken, the camera model, GPS location and so on. How it works The image is drawn onto a browser canvas, and only the visible pixels are written out as a new image. Images exported from a canvas carry no Exif or other metadata, so all of it is gone. Output format โข PNG โ PNG (no quality change) โข JPEG and everything else โ JPEG at 95% quality (transparent areas become white)
Worked example

Things to be aware of
- The orientation tag of portrait photos is removed too, but the browser applies it while drawing, so the picture keeps its upright orientation.
- JPEGs are recompressed, so the file can end up either larger or smaller than the original.
- The original colour profile is removed and the image is converted to standard sRGB (browsers such as Chrome attach an sRGB profile), so photos taken in a wide colour gamut may shift slightly in colour.
FAQ
What does EXIF metadata contain?
It can include capture time, camera model, exposure settings, and GPS location โ sharing a photo online without stripping this can unintentionally leak your location.
Does this reduce image quality?
PNG images are re-encoded as PNG with no quality loss. JPEG images are re-encoded at high quality (95%), so any loss is minimal.
Is the image uploaded anywhere?
