How the calculation works
Create PNG images in six sizes for website favicons and app icons from a single image. Sizes and main uses 16ร16, 32ร32, 48ร48: favicons shown on browser tabs and bookmarks 180ร180: the icon when added to an iPhone or iPad home screen (apple-touch-icon) 192ร192, 512ร512: Android home screens and PWA (web app) icons Non-square images are cropped around the centre to make them square. Shrinking uses high-quality interpolation. Everything happens in your browser; the image is never uploaded.
Worked example
Adding them to HTML <link rel="icon" href="/favicon-32x32.png" sizes="32x32" type="image/png"> <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/favicon-180x180.png"> Bold, simple logos read best at 16ร16. Fine text or photos turn to mush at small sizes.
Things to be aware of
- Start from a square image of at least 512ร512 pixels for clean results at every size.
- The old .ico format is not produced; current major browsers support PNG favicons.
- Browsers can keep showing an old favicon after you change it. Clear the cache or try another browser to check.
